I wandered around for a while, I'm not sure what I'm missing - the screenshots imply some sort of story I'm expected to stumble across?
There is not really a linear story in the game, no. There's things that can be done to unlock items and open up areas.

Looking around online it looks like this wasn't included in the download here, perhaps? https://www.rpgmakerweb.com/run-time-package
After I downloaded and installed it the game runs.
Ok, new version is out. Hopefully, it works!
I uninstalled RPGVXAce RTP and downloaded the 1.2 game release and it works!
